How My Passion for Art Started
I’ve lived in Charleston, South Carolina for most of my life. My family has been in this area for numerous generations. However, I never realized how lucky I was to be able to grow up in the Isle of Palms.
As an artist, I am committed to conveying the Lowcountry’s unparalleled beauty through my works.
Education and Early Career
I received my education from Charleston’s public school system. Back then, I envisioned myself becoming a cadet at The Citadel. This was a challenge from my girlfriend’s father (I think he wanted me to go away).
I graduated with a degree in civil engineering and worked for the Navy and a local private engineering consulting firm. In 1993, I started my own engineering practice, doing environmental consulting for 18 years.

Love and Gratitude
I am genuinely grateful to those who have helped me understand art over the last 17 years. These people include my mom, wife, family members, and great teachers.
When I was 12 years old, I began my art lessons with Ms. Gore a couple of houses down from us on 20th Avenue. As a teenager, I worked with my father to provide details for moldings in my family’s specialty millwork business (Southern Lumber & Millwork).
In 2001, my high school sweetheart and wife for more than 16 years, at that time, found old paintings in a closet. She gave me weekly art classes with the late Martin Ahrens as a Christmas gift. Martin taught me how to hold a paint brush; it felt similar to learning how to walk.
I continue to take from Joyce Hall, Martin’s wife. She is also an accomplished, award-winning artist.
I have studied with Ms. laurie Meyer as well, and attend workshops as much as possible to improve my skills.
